Election results for the new Scottish Parliament

When it sits for the first time on the first of June, the new Scottish Parliament will look like this: 56 Labour seats, 35 SNP, 18 Tories, 17 Liberal Democrats, 1 Independent, and 1 Socialist. Labour took 34% of the popular vote, not quite the statement it was looking for, but enough to stay ahead of the Scottish National Party.

Labour Party leader Donald Dewar is keeping mum about talks to form a coalition government with the Liberal Democrats. Interestingly, the first stumbling block in these talks is tuition fees. Labour had pledged to expand higher education while the Lib Dems promised to abolish tuition fees, the same fees that would help Labour make good on its word.

The biggest upset in the election came not from the votes counted, per se, but from those not counted: 42% of the Scottish electorate did not vote at all. Low turnout is being blamed on a lackluster campaign and the silent protest of those who voted against a Scottish Parliament in the referendum.

MSPs will be sworn in on Wednesday, May 12.
