Moses "Mogue" Doyle

Born Oulart Hill, Parish of Ferns, County Wexford, Ireland, ca. 1764. Only son of James Doyle & Ann O'Brien; seven sisters. Leader of a group of United Irishmen during 1798 Irish Rebellion. Arrested and sentenced to death by British; escaped by dressing in fiancee's clothing and walking past guards; landed Ship Harbour (Port Hawkesbury), Cape Breton Island 1799. Pardoned, returned to Ireland 1803; married fiancee Judith O'Neill 1806. Remarried after Judith's death, came back to Cape Breton 1826, settled at Margaree Forks, Inverness County. Died at Margaree Forks 4 November, 1839, age 75. Buried at St. Michael's Parish Cemetery, East Magaree.

Mogue's three children and all of his sisters and/or their families ultimately emigrated to Cape Breton. His known descendants in the New World number at least 1863; those of his parents, at least 3743.
