Musings from the Cemetery: by Patsy Hennessy

Bethany United Church Cemetery, Euphemia Township, Ontario, Canada

This unusual stone was found in the graveyard of the Bethany United Church, in Euphemia Township, Chatham-Kent Co., Ontario. Although you may not be able to see it on the Internet, the large polished ball at the top acts as a mirror to reflect the entire graveyard so that no matter where you stand, you can see all the other gravestones in the yard. According to local legend, world famous Canadian author Robertson Davies, who was born in nearby Thamesville, wrote a short story about this particular gravestone. In the story, a mild mannered school teacher saves up all her money for a spectacular gravestone so that in eternity, her presence will be reflected onto those who pass by. Ironically, its appearance in this column has cast the rural schoolteacher's reflection onto the whole world - something she probably never dreamed possible when she died in 1902 at age 73.
