The name Arbuthnott is from the lands in Kincardineshire of the same name. Early documents called this place "Aberbothenoth" which has been translated to mean "mouth of the stream below the noble house". This land has belonged to the same family for generations and is now in the hands of the present Viscount of Arbuthnott.
It is thought that the lands of Arbuthnott were aquired because of a marriage between the family and the daughter of Osbert Olifard who was known as "The Crusader" during the reign of William the Lion.
In 1355, Philip de Arbuthnott is the first of the name Arbuthnott to be declared "of that Ilk".
The family seat is still at Arbuthnott House.
