The name Pringle first appeared in a charter around 1270 and appeared as "Hoopryngil". The family was known as Hop Pringle which some thought came from the Welsh "Ap" which means "son of".

The Pringles of Whitsome supported Bruce and because of this, they lost their lands to John Balliol. They got them back in 1315 after the Battle of Bannockburn because of a charter by Robert the Bruce.

Robert Pringle was squire to James, Earl of Douglas at the Battle of Otterburn in 1388. After the battle he received the lands of Smailholm in Roxburghshire from Archibald the Grimm. There, they built the Tower of Smailholm which still stand today.
