The name Bannerman is said to have originated when Sir Alexander Carron was made hereditary Standard Bearer to the king because of his bravery at the River Spey in the late eleventh or early twelfth century. This privilege is still held by his descendants today. The Bannerman family was later on granted land of Clyntrees, Waterton and Welltown in 1367 by David II. In 1370, they were granted land to the east of Aberdeen.

The Bannermans eventually became mixed up in the conflict between the Gordons and the Forbeses. They at first took sides with the Forbeses, but Margaret Bannerman married George Gordon in 1608. Then, in 1682, Charles II named Sir Alexander Bannerman a Baronet of Nova Scotia for his loyalty during the civil war. James VIII knighted Provost Bannerman for his loyalty in 1715.

Alexander Bannerman supported Charles Edward Stuart at the Culloden field disaster in 1764, and barely escaped to France with his life. He was then forced to sell the Elsick estates in face of a threat of forfeiture for suspected Jacobite intrigues. The estates were later reacquired by another Sir Alexander Bannerman in 1851, after which it eventually ended up as the estate for the present chief of the Carnegies, the Duke of Fife.

Sir Campbell Bannerman was the Liberal Prime Minister of Britain from 1905 to 1908. He was made Prime Minister in 1905 by Edward VII, after the resignation of Arthur Balfour. During his time in office, he appointed 2 future prime ministers to his cabinet: Herbert Asquith and David Lloyd George. He died in 1908. One of Scotland's greatest Rugby players was John Bannerman. He won no less than thirty-nine caps for his country and was made Lord Bannerman of Kildonan in 1967. His son is the current Bannerman chief.
