The Dunlop name comes from the lands of the same name in Scotland. The name may come from the phrase "dun lub", which means "fort at the bend", or it may orginate from "dunlapach" which means "muddy hill".

The name was first recorded in 1260 when Dominus Willelmus Dunlop was noted as a witness in a deed. He is also the first member of the family of Dunlop of Dunlop to appear in Scottish documents. The name also appears in the 1296 Ragman Roll.

In 1489, Constantyn Dunlop was appointed by Parliament as a minor baron to collect the rents of the Crown. During the Peninsular War that went on between 1808 to 1814, James Dunlop of Dunlop commanded a brigade under Wellington and earned the rank of Major General.

Another branch of the family lived in Glasgow and were shipowners and merchants. In 1916, Sir Thomas Dunlop was made a baronet. From 1914 to 1917, he was Lord Provost and Lord Lieutenant of Glasgow and was decorated by several other countries.

John Dunlop founded the first newspaper in the USA in 1771.
