born August 25, 1930
When he turned 65, Sean Connery got a senior's bus pass and
began collecting old age pension. After working for more than half a century, the
"sexiest" Scot said he'd earned it. But despite his deserved status, the
actor--who's been in over 60 films--has yet to retire.
Connery's career in the spotlight began with an unsuccessful bid for Mr. Universe.
Although not a viable body-builder, his moment on the stage led to a role in the
London musical production of South Pacific, and from then on he had parts in various
films. In 1963, he was cast in his most notorious role: Bond, James Bond. He went
on to star in seven Bond films. Connery notes with amusement that his grandchildren
quote James Bond lines to him.
Although Bond established Connery in the box office, and in the hearts of young ladies around the world, he went on to make many more
popular and respected movies, including Highlander, The Name of the Rose, and The
Hunt for Red October. Connery won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar in 1987 for his performance
in The Untouchables. And in 1996 he proved once again that despite the old age pension,
he could do action-adventure with the best of them when he starred in The Rock with
Nicholas Cage. A Scottish nationalist, Connery has appeared in advertisements for
the Scottish National Party. It was recently revealed that he contributes £4,800
a month to the SNP, which supports an independent Scotland. The Sunday Times reported
that Connery's support of an independent Scotland cost him a knighthood earlier this
year.
Connery
has also gone on record with his support of--you guessed it--baldness. Perhaps as
a boost to bald men around the world, since his Bond roles, Connery went without
a toupee in The Untouchables, and it was after that film that he claimed the title,
"Sexiest Man Alive." Proof that neither age nor hair has anything to do
with success!
This summer, Connery stars with Welsh actor Catherine Zeta Jones (The Mask of Zorro) in Entrapment.
