This is "Come Home to Scotland" Month at the Gathering of the Clans, and when you do come home to Scotland, you may see furniture designed by renowned Scottish architect, Robert Adam.
Born in Kirkcaldy, Fife and trained in Edinburgh and Italy, Adam created one of the eighteenth century's most influential architectural firms. He was inspired by Italian classical design, and his own Neoclassical interiors continue to inspire others.
Robert formed the creative genius in his partnership with his brother, James, and together they designed many public and private buildings in England and Scotland. Visitors to Edinburgh can see Adam's work at the Register House, and at Edinburgh University Old College. As well, Hopetoun House at Queensferry, is known as Scotland's greatest example of the mansions Adam designed. Much more evidence of his work remains in London, where his firm was based. Terraced Georgian townhouses and Portland Square in London. Near London, Osterly Park and Syon House also provide insight into Adam's light, elegant style. The architect furniture designs were produced by Thomas Chippendale. Adam also designed distinctive vases and urns. Adam was architect to King George III. The artist and architect died in London and is buried in Westminster Abbey. | ||
