The Clan Finder now contains more than 2,200 Scottish surnames belonging to more than 100 Scottish Clans.
Type your surname into the box. Hit the Enter key.
The Clan Finder will take you to the nearest surname matching the one you entered. Look in the column to the right to find the Clan. If the Clan has a page on the Gathering of the Clans, you can just click on the Clan name and we'll take you there.
If a surname is associated with more than one Clan, there will be multiple entries of the surname in the Clan Finder list.
Surname Clan Carmicheal (1) MacDougall Carmicheal (2) Stewart Carmicheal (3) Stewart of Appin
For simplicity, we have adopted the spelling MacMc, just type in Mac instead.
Use your imagination when thinking about the spelling the main portion of a surname. For instance, MacGhee and MacGhie and MacGee all lead to Clan MacKay. They're different spellings of the same surname.
No, it doesn't. It means that your surname is not included in our current listing of Scottish names. There are many thousands of Scottish surnames that are not directly related to Clans. We just haven't had the time or the resources to put them all into our database.
Unfortunately, we do not offer a genealogical service at this time. The main purpose of the Gathering of the Clans is to provide you with a single source of information about Scottish heritage and to provide you with an opportunity to share with other people of Scottish descent.
We try our best to ensure that our information is accurate and up-to-date but nobody's perfect. If you think you've discovered an error, let us know. We need your help to make this site as useful as possible.
If you spot an error, drop us an email at: webmaster@discribe.ca
The names in the database were collected from a wide range of sources. They were laboriously typed into a simple database on a PC and reviewed for accuracy by Lori then moved to our Unix server where Brian went to work on the custom search engine. Manny did the graphics. Lorna managed the project. George cleaned up.
The database is written in C++ and runs on our Sun Sparc 20 server in a Unix operating environment.

Attention visitors: Tartans.com is back. Please note that this is a snapshot of the site as it existed nearly 20 years ago and you may encounter broken links; we are still combing through the site and correcting those as we find them. Please also note that some sections are currently not functional, primarily the discussion forums/clan chat boards.
