The Colvilles are Norman in origin and it is believed that they originally came to Scotland as knights of William the Conqueror. The name itself is most likely derived from the town of Colville located between Caen and Bayeux in Normandy and first appears in Scotland in the 12th century when Philip de Colville was listed as a witness on a charter from Malcom IV. Philip was also one of the hostages exchanged for the release of William the Lion and he was granted lands in Ayrshire as well as the baronies of Oxnam and Heton in Roxburgshire. His son, William, later obtained the barony of Kinnaird in Stirlingshire, which has remained the seat of the family to this day.

The Colvilles have also had a strong military tradition, including many who played significant roles and/or rose to high-ranking positions. The honourable Charles Colville fought at the Battle of Culloden in 1746, commanding the 21st Regiment of Foot, and he obtained the rank of lieutenant general before his death in 1775. Alexander Coville served with distinction in the navy, becoming a captain in in 1744. He was later promoted to the rank of commodore and given command of the Northumberland, which played an important role in breaking the French siege of Quebec during the winter of 1759. He attained the rank of Vice Admiral ten years after.

Several Colvilles have gained recognition in other callings as well. Some of these include a Colville who sits in the House of Lords, in Parliament, Dr. James Colville who earned several high degrees at Glasgow University in Scotland, Alexander Colville, a renown Canadian artist, and Richard Colville, who has served as press secretary to the Queen of England since the 1960s. The town of Colville (population 5000) in northern Washington, U.S., is named after Sir Andrew Colville, who discovered and renamed a tribe in that region. The title Viscount Colville of Culross is one of several titles held by this family and the current Viscount (the thirteenth Lord Colville of Culross) succeeded to the title in 1945.

Historically the Colvilles have also been closely associated with the Colvins of Ireland.
